FOUR WEEK Modern Calligraphy Introductory Workshop – each session 2 hours

PLEASE NOTE I KNOW LIFE GETS IN THE WAY AND I AM HAPPY TO BE FLEXIBLE AND FIT IN EXTRA SESSIONS IF YOU KNOW  WHEN BOOKING YOU ARE UNABLE TO MAKE ALL DATES.  (as long as they are booked within a month of the end date). This four-week course will give you an introduction to two of the most popular tools used in modern calligraphy, the brush pen and pointed pen. Throughout the course we will build our knowledge, learn techniques and your tutor will have lots of tips and tricks to give you along the way. Included in
the workshop will be handouts, a brush pen and a pointed pen, nib and ink so you can continue your
practice at home.

Structure
Week 1: Beginner Brush Lettering
This workshop will be ideal for those want to learn the art of Brush Lettering, whether you want to
add decoration to gifts and cards or even your own art work. Templates will be used to help you
understand how to form letters. You will have the opportunity to use a selection of brush pens and
experiment with different techniques to form exciting lettering and stunning effects.

Week 2: Beginner Pointed Pen
During this workshop we will be learning the art of calligraphy but with a modern twist. A lovely
introduction to calligraphy using a pointed pen and ink. Your tutor will demonstrate throughout the
workshop so you can understand the technique required to create the thick and thin lines which are
key to this beautiful craft. Using drills to get you started you will soon be writing letters and joining
them to make words. We will give you advice on how changing the shape of your letters can change
the whole dynamic of your calligraphy. Finally, you will have the opportunity using templates to
create your own piece of artwork

Week 3: Flourish & Bounce
This workshop will build on the knowledge and practice taught during the beginner pen and nib
workshop.
We start with some warm-up drills before reviewing the basic letter-forms. Following on from this
we will help you to understand where and when you can bounce your letters and how we can’ break
the rules’. We will also delve into the scary world of flourishing to add flair and elegance to your
calligraphy.
There will be a completely new Improver kit which will include a workbook for you to take away
together with an alternative nib, oblique pen and bottle of Sumi ink.

Week 4: Word Art
This final workshop will give you an opportunity to choose which tool you would prefer to create
your final piece. Subject to time you may be able to create one with each tool. You will choose a
short quote from a selection provided by your tutor or you can bring your own with you. Building on
everything you have been taught over the past four weeks’, we will learn how to knit words together
to create a simple a piece of word art using colour blending techniques
